An Aria A Day #113
MICHAEL LAMPARD
‘Gefrorene Tränen’
From Winterreise
By Franz Schubert
Piano Alex Raineri
Enjoying the excuse to ‘get dressed up in lockdown’, baritone Michael Lampard shares Schubert’s ‘Gefrorene Tränen’ from a very chilly Melbourne. Michael is joined remotely by Alex Raineri on piano.
Following on the theme from his earlier song cycle ‘Die schöne Müllerin’, Schubert’s haunting setting of words by Wilhelm Müller, ‘Winterreise (Winter’s Journey)’, was published just before the composer’s death in 1827.
Frozen drops fall
from my cheeks;
have I, then, not noticed
that I have been weeping?
Other artists who have performed works by Schubert for An Aria A Day include Peter Coleman-Wright AO, Emma Pearson, Shaun Brown, Sarah Crane, and Gregory Massingham who accompanied himself while singing ‘Der Leiermann’ from ‘Winterreise’ on 17 May.
