An Aria A Day #127

GRANT DOYLE
‘Ya vas lyublyu’
from The Queen of Spades
by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Piano Alex Raineri

12th September, 2020

From London, his home for the past 23 years, Australian baritone Grant Doyle performs Yeletsky’s ‘Ya vas lyublyu’ from ‘The Queen of Spades’, a role he performed for Opera Holland Park in 2017, straight after performing in Opera Queensland’s ‘The Pearlfishers’.

‘The Queen of Spades’ or ‘Pique Dame’ features a Russian libretto by the composer’s brother Modest Tchaikovsky and is based on the 1834 novella of the same name by Alexander Pushkin, albeit with a dramatically different plot. Reportedly the entire opera only took 44 days to compose!
