An Aria A Day #138
CHRISTOPHER RICHARDSON
‘Ja, es sollen wohl Berge weichen’
from Elijah
by Felix Mendelssohn
Tasmanian-born bass-baritone Christopher Richardson performs Mendelssohn’s ‘Ja, es sollen wohl Berge weichen’ from the oratorio ‘Elijah’, or ‘Elias’ as it is known when performed in German. Premiering at the 1846 Birmingham Festival, the oratorio depicts events in the life of the Prophet Elijah as told in the Old Testament.
Appearing towards the end of the second movement, ‘Ja, es sollen wohl die Berge weichen’ (‘For the mountains shall depart’) celebrates finding the strength to move forward in incredibly difficult times.
