An Aria A Day #19

CAROLINE MENG
‘Habanera’
from Carmen
by Georges Bizet

26th May, 2020

Caroline Meng brings us this performance from her home in Paris. Carmen’s entrance aria ‘L’amour est un oiseau rebelle’ (‘Love is a rebellious bird’) needs little introduction.

Its iconic and now ubiquitous melody is so infectiously Spanish that it was mistaken for a folk song even by Bizet, and the Habanera opening page in the musical score includes a credit for its original composer, Sebastián Yradier. In the opera, Carmen regales an eager crowd with her seductive, free-spirited sentiments, saying that she is like a bird who can’t be tamed.
