An Aria A Day #71

from The Rabbits
by Kate Miller-Heidke and Lally Katz
Piano Dominic Woodhead

18th July, 2020

From her home in Townsville, Sarah Murr performs the hauntingly beautiful ‘Where?’ from the 2015 opera by Kate Miller-Heidke and Lally Katz, with additional music by Iain Grandage.

Based on the book by John Marsden and Shaun Tan, the story is an allegory for the colonisation of Australia, about an invasion of rabbits who destroy the land and lives of the native marsupials.

The opera was commissioned in 2014 and debuted at the Perth International Arts Festival the following year. The 2016 cast recording was nominated for Best Original Soundtrack/Cast/Show Album in that year’s ARIA Awards.

Traditional owners and custodians, the Bindal and Wulgurukaba People are the first people to have lived in the Townsville region, where Sarah recorded this aria. Opera Queensland respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the Lands across Queensland and pays respect to their ancestors who came before them and to Elders past, present and emerging.
