An Aria A Day #90

REBECCA CASSIDY
‘How can I keep from singing’
by Robert Wadsworth Lowry
arranged by Narelle French
Piano Narelle French

6th August, 2020

Opera Queensland was recently made aware of an opera fanatic who, now dubbed ‘The Miracle Man’, survived Covid-19 after contracting the virus in March. To share the joy of opera with Graham and his wife Glenda, this special ‘pop up aria’ was recorded in their Brisbane home.

In this performance, Opera Queensland Young Artist, Rebecca Cassidy, performs ‘How can I keep from singing’, a hymn by American minister Robert Lowry. The American folksong, known by its uplifting final line, has been performed by a wide variety of singers including Enya, Janis Joplin, Eva Cassidy and Pete Seeger during the folk revival of the 1960s.

Lowry also wrote the original hymn of ‘At the River’ which became a beloved, iconic favourite in its arrangement by Aaron Copland. Paul Whelan performed ‘At the River’ for An Aria A Day 11 July.
