Stephen Emmerson

Biography

Stephen Emmerson is an adjunct professor at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University where he taught for many years.

He studied piano with Pamela Page at the University of Queensland and Peter Wallfisch in London and holds Masters and Doctoral degrees from Oxford University. Together with his activities as teacher and researcher, he has sustained a busy performance career as a pianist over several decades having performed widely in concerts and festivals around Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Asia.

In addition to solo performances, he has performed widely with many of Australia’s leading classical musicians. He has been a member of various chamber ensembles notably including the Griffith Trio (an Ensemble-in-Residence at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University for over a decade), Dean–Emmerson–Dean, The Lunaire Collective and the Endeavour Trio (with Paul Dean and Trish O’Brien).

Recordings of his playing in collaboration with a variety of performers have been released by ABC Classics, Move Records, The Anthology of Australian Music on Disc, CPO, Tall Poppies, Contact and Melba. His performances and recordings have been frequently broadcast on local and national radio.
