Biography
Mezzo-soprano Ashlyn Tymms has established herself as one of Australia’s most exciting young artists, recently winning the top prize at the 2025 Opera Awards.
She made her Opera Australia mainstage debut as Dorothée in Cinderella and returned in 2025 to sing Ježibaba in Rusalka. Ashlyn has a particularly strong association with West Australian Opera, where her many appearances include the title role in Carmen, Ježibaba, Dorabella in Così fan tutte, Dido in Dido and Aeneas, Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, Flora in La traviata, Emilia in Otello, and Lapák and Pásková in The Cunning Little Vixen. In 2026, she sings Olga in Eugene Onegin with West Australian Opera and reprises Ježibaba for Opera Queensland.
Ashlyn is a passionate advocate of contemporary music, performing the Stewardess in Jonathan Dove’s Flight for State Opera South Australia, Judith in the world premiere of The Two Sisters with Tête à Tête Opera in the UK, and Fanny Price in Dove’s Mansfield Park for New Zealand Opera.
As a concert soloist, Ashlyn is a frequent guest with the major Australian state orchestras in repertoire such as Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Mahler’s Symphonies No. 8 and No. 3, Mozart’s Requiem, Verdi’s Requiem, Bach’s St. John Passion, and Handel’s Messiah. She will make her debuts with the Sydney and New Zealand Symphony Orchestras in 2026.
A graduate of the Royal College of Music in London, Ashlyn was awarded the Outstanding Australian Musician prize by the Royal Over-Seas League.
