Benjamin Knapton

Biography

Benjamin Knapton is a director, creative producer and arts leader with experience spanning 33 countries across theatre, contemporary circus, and opera. He is currently Director of Programming at Opera Queensland, following 15 years with Circa where he served as Associate Director and later Associate Artistic Director. As part of the senior leadership team, he played a pivotal role in leading Circa’s transformation into one of the world’s leading performing arts companies.

Benjamin has an extensive resume of directing new works and engagement programs both at Circa and independently. His creations have reached more than 350,000 audience members across 730 performances worldwide, contributing to the evolution of contemporary performance across multiple genres. His recent work includes Warriors, which premiered at the Royal Opera House Mumbai, and Rise, created for the Osaka World Expo. He has also conceived and directed major intercultural collaborations and large-scale civic events, including the Athletes’ Village Welcome Ceremony for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Benjamin holds a Master of Arts and a PhD in Theatre Directing.
