Q&A with Mara Gaudenzi
Italian-born mezzo-soprano Mara Gaudenzi stars as the kind and generous Cinderella in La Cenerentola. Mara talked to us about her love for Angelina as a character, travelling to Australia for the very first time and life away from the stage.
You’ve performed as Angelina in La Cenerentola before, what do you love most about this role!
I love Angelina’s deep soul and her kindness. She doesn’t give up to the vileness of her family, she can forgive because she is noble inside, long before marrying the prince.
What’s your favourite part of collaborating with a new cast and creative team?
It’s always stimulating meeting new people, new artists and talents. Music helps a lot to create human bonds, because it’s not just music but we share a part of our life story.
Every opera has its iconic moments. What’s one musical moment in La Cenerentola that you’re most excited for the audience to experience, and why?
I think it’s the very end, with the magnificent Angelina’s aria: the end of sorrow, the forgiveness, and finally love and joy spread all over the theatre.
What’s your favourite fairytale?
I’m going to be banal, but it’s Cenerentola. It’s very inspiring in the tough times in life, remembering how important is to be always good human beings with myself and everyone.
When you’re not performing, what’s your go-to way to relax and recharge?
Many things: meeting my friends and my family, reading books, watching movies, listening to podcast, I don’t get bored.
What do you hope audiences take away from La Cenerentola?
Life is not easy, but if you believe in your kindness and intimate soul life can give you true happiness.
Anything you are excited to do when visiting Brisbane?
I can’t wait to visit Australia, it’s my first time in this wonderful country! I’d like to discover nature first, but also visit museums and know better the culture.
