How did your journey with Opera Queensland begin?

Aylish: My journey with Opera Queensland began in 2025 when I was accepted into the Young Artist Program. I found out about the Young Artist Program through social media, and I was inspired to apply because I wanted to make my next step professionally and get some experience and learning as part of an opera company.

What can audiences expect from your showcase?

Aylish: I think audiences can expect a very authentic performance of who we all are as individual, passionate artists. I believe audiences will be able to see the journey we’ve undertaken over the last two years and where our hearts lie as performers.

Are there any specific singers or performers who have inspired or influenced you?

Aylish: I have so many singers and performers that I look up to so much, but one of my absolute favourites to watch is Maria Callas. Not only did she have her astounding voice, she was also an incredibly captivating performer. In terms of performers I’ve seen live, I would have to say that Patti Lupone was a huge inspiration for me. From the second she walked onstage she had the whole concert hall audience in the palm of her hand, her stage presence was beyond anything I’d ever experienced before.

You recently starred as The Kitchen-Hand in Rusalka, can you tell us about your experience starring in a mainstage production?

Aylish: I had the best time during Rusalka, it was my first professional role and it was such a rewarding production to be a part of. I loved being able to learn from my colleagues and really get into my character onstage. It was also a great experience to be able to sing onstage in a production with an orchestra. I’ve been described quite a few times as a stage animal so I had so much fun working on this show!

Do you have a favourite moment during your time as a Young Artist at Opera Queensland?

Aylish: I would say that my favourite moment has definitely been playing the kitchen hand in Rusalka. It was such a beautiful production and I felt so proud making my professional debut in this role.

What is the next step for you after leaving Opera Queensland’s Young Artist Program?

Aylish: The next big step for me is to make the big move to Europe! I’m planning to move by the end of 2027 and undertake one of the Young Artist programs I aspire to get into in Germany, Austria or Switzerland.
