Hailing from a musical family in Halifax, Yorkshire, Matthew enjoyed performing on stage from a very early age both singing and acting. His first singing performance on TV was at the age of twelve in the series Your 100 Best Hymns.

Matthew was awarded a coveted foundation scholarship to study voice at the Royal College of Music in London. Studying for five years, specialising in Lieder and Art Song, he was awarded diplomas in both teaching and performance, as well as an associateship of the RCM (ARCM) for postgraduate opera studies.

Whilst based in London, Matthew worked extensively as a soloist throughout Europe and was in regular demand on the Oratorio scene as well as in the Opera circle. Performances included Spirito and Pastore in Gluck’s Orfeo at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Bruckner’s D Minor Mass in Il Duomo in Florence, Corydon in The Fairy Queen at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and Lecture-Recital tours of Greece and Scotland.

Matthew has worked with Opera Queensland since 1996 and has performed many roles: Bartolo, Basilio and Fiorello in the Barber of Seville; Frank in Die Fledermaus; Morales in Carmen; Bartolo in The Adventures of Figaro; Baron Douphol in La Traviata; Friar Jean in Romeo et Juliette; Officer Krupke in West Side Story; Pontius Pilate in the St Matthew Passion; The Guide in Carmen and The Assassin in Macbeth. In addition, Matthew recorded a song for OQ’s Aria A Day programme during lockdown.

Recently Matthew performed the role of King Arkel in Pélleas et Mélisande by Debussy with Voxalis Opera, the Sergeant in Pirates of Penzance with Prospero Arts and worked with Opera Australia in their productions of Aïda and Götterdämmerung. He often sings in concerts ranging from Zelenka to Sullivan.

Matthew is proud to have worked with Cricket Australia and the NRL numerous times, singing the English National Anthem around the country in front of huge crowds and to international TV audiences.
