Carlos Bárcenas

Biography

Born in Cali, Colombia, Carlos studied marine biology before having singing lessons with Gustavo A. Marquez. He then moved to Melbourne, Australia where his opera career blossomed. He holds a Bachelor of Music Performance and a Master of Music (Opera Performance) at University of Melbourne where he was awarded the Keith G. Chapman Memorial Scholarship.

In Australia he has worked with Victorian Opera, Victorian Opera Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Melbourne Lyric Opera, Opera Australia, Australian Ballet, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Short Black Opera. He has also worked in Italy, Germany, and Colombia. His roles have included Marco (The Gondoliers, Sullivan), Alexander (Il re pastore, Mozart) Michael (Pecan Summer, Cheetham), Tony (Master Class by Terrence McNally 2018) Steuermann (Der fliegende Holländer, Wagner), Edgardo and Normanno (Lucia di Lammermoor, Donizetti), Sir Bruno (I puritani, Bellini), Flavio (Norma, Bellini), The Pied Piper (The Pied Piper, Mills), Saint Chavez (Four Saints in Three Acts, Thomson), Maese Pedro (Master Peter’s Puppet Show, de Falla) Prince April (Sleeping Beauty, Respighi), Witch (Hansel and Gretel, Humperdinck), Prince Charming (Cendrillon, Massenet) Arnoldo (Guillaume Tell, Rossini), Elvino (La sonnambula, Donizetti), Tebaldo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Bellini) and Nadir (The Pearl Fishers, Bizet). Carlos received a Green Room award for his performance of Steuermann in Der fliegende Holländer.
