Luke Volker

Biography

Luke is a Brisbane-based music director, vocal coach, composer and accompanist. He holds a Bachelor of Music from QUT (where he also studied Theatre and Acting), a Masters in Contemporary Music from the Queensland Conservatorium, and trained in music direction at the Tony Award-winning Goodspeed Theatre (USA).

Most recently for Opera Queensland and shake & stir theatre co Luke provided lyrics, arrangements and musical direction for the school touring shows, La bohème and The Frog Prince.

Luke is the composer and music supervisor of There Once Was A Puffin, an online opera for children produced by Little Match Productions during 2020’s lockdown period. Other theatrical credits include The Owl and The Pussycat (also for Little Match), Out! (Altitude Theatre), Vice & Violins (Camerata/Brisbane Powerhouse), TICK, TICK… BOOM! (THAT Production Company), Bare (Understudy Productions), A Little Night Music (Brisbane Philharmonic), Joh for PM! (JUTE/Brisbane Powerhouse), RENT (Queensland Conservatorium), and Company (Ignatians Musical Society).

A regular on the Australian cabaret and festival circuits, Luke has provided arrangements and musical direction for national tours of #FirstWorldWhiteGirls, Ruby Slipper Chronicles, Cool Britannia, Doll and Happily Ever After, (for which he won a Matilda Award). He has toured with Opera Queensland’s Open Stage program, and has music directed the Universal Monsters Live Rock & Roll Show and Hogwarts Frog Choir for Universal Studios Japan in Osaka.

As a pianist, Luke performs regularly with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, is the resident accompanist for SingEasy’s Musical Theatre Industry Night, and has worked with such celebrated artists as Lea Salonga, Faith Prince, Rhonda Burchmore, Kristin Chenoweth and Philip Quast.

Luke acknowledges the Jagera and Turrbal people as the Traditional Owners of the lands on which he lives and works.
